Code of Principles

Spanish version

Code of Principles of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) to which Chequeado adheres:

Chequeado is one of the certified organizations by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) from the Poynter Institute. The organization undergoes an annual evaluation by an academic or independent expert hired by the IFCN to analyze compliance with the five principles of the Code. The expert makes a recommendation to certify the organization, and in the case of Chequeado, it has always been positive (in 2017, 2018, and 2019). The certification is approved by the IFCN Board.

Below is the Code of Principles to which we commit ourselves, allowing everyone to monitor compliance and fact-check Chequeado.

The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) from the Poynter Institute is committed to promoting excellence in fact-checking. We believe that impartial and transparent fact-checking can be a powerful tool for accountability journalism. Conversely, partisan or source-lacking fact-checking can increase distrust in the media and experts, and distort public understanding.

This Code of Principles applies to organizations that regularly publish impartial reports on the accuracy of statements by public figures and renowned institutions, as well as other widely circulated claims of interest to society. It is the result of consultations among fact-checkers worldwide and provides practical principles to aspire to in their daily work.

  • COMMITMENT TO IMPARTIALITY AND EQUITY

We always fact-check using the same standards and do not favor any particular side. We follow the same process for each fact-check and let the evidence dictate our conclusions. We do not advocate for or take sides on the facts we check.

See our impartiality and equity policy.

  • COMMITMENT TO SOURCE TRANSPARENCY

We want our community to be able to verify our findings independently. We provide all sources in a detailed manner so that the community can replicate our work, except in cases where the personal safety of a particular source may be compromised.

See our source transparency policy.

  • COMMITMENT TO TRANSPARENCY OF FINANCING AND ORGANIZATION

We are transparent about our funding sources. If we accept funds from other organizations, we ensure that they do not influence the conclusions we reach in our reports. We provide details of the professional backgrounds of all key figures in our organization and explain our organizational structure and legal status. We offer our community a clear means of communication with us.

See our financing transparency policy.

  • COMMITMENT TO TRANSPARENCY OF METHODOLOGY

We explain the methodology we use to select, investigate, write, edit, publish, and correct our fact-checks. We encourage our readers to submit statements for fact-checking, and we are transparent about the reasons and methods we use for fact-checking.

See our methodology.

  • COMMITMENT TO OPEN AND HONEST CORRECTIONS

We publish our corrections policy and adhere to it strictly. We correct in a clear and transparent manner in accordance with our policy to ensure that our community has access to the corrected version.

See our updates and corrections policy.
