Changes in our Executive Direction and strengthening
of our team

In order to empower the development of our organization, we strengthened our main roles: Pablo M. Fernandez took the role of Executive Director & Editor-In-Chief and Laura Zommer left the role where she worked during the last 10 years, to perform now as general Director. In addition, we created the Communication Direction.

As part of our challenge to show the organization´s evolution, scope, local and global impact in a broader and more comprehensive way and - above all - the current reach we have achieved, we relaunched our website with a new proposal, more simple, clear and intuitive.

We further strengthened our robot, Chequeabot, in order to give the chance to more fact checkers to take advantage of this artificial intelligence tool to automate part of the verification process. At the moment, seven countries from Latin América are using it to fact check information in a better and quicker way.

Since the beginning, data has been an essential part of our work. In order to enforce its impact, we created our “Data Center”, a special unit that develops articles and journalistic investigations based on public information requests and visualizations, to provide better verified information to the public debate.

With the purpose of bringing closer our viral content verification method, we created this virtual game that invites journalism students and the whole community to take the role of a fact-checker and solve puzzles. Each of its is focused on each step that our newsroom team takes to debunk misinformation.

Misinformation literacy in school curriculum

We produced a report where national education guidelines are analyzed, in order to identify the presence of skills and competencies that we consider necessary to fight against misinformation and to promote learning related to media and information literacy.

Based on the increase of science denialist movements and the proliferation of misinformation around them, we launched Chequeado Science, a project focused on investigating and identifying the main patterns of misinformation in Argentina regarding science, health, and the environment, among other topics.

In order to increase even more our impact in the fight against disinformation, we work with innovative formats such as visualizations and videos through which we explain why that content is false and how it is created.

Guides and seminars: 'How to verify disinformation on complex issues

Post-pandemic, we identified 5 “socially sensitive” topics. Together with specialists and verifiers from the region, we develop a series of practical guides (supported by online seminars) for journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean with tools to improve coverage on climate change, elections, gender, science and health, and migration.

#PostaoTorta (#RealorCake) is our campaign to continue moving the community to verify information before sharing it. Under the motto “Don’t eat everything that is said”, we launched three spots focused on checking Argentine political figures and a series of verifications aimed at debunking myths of general interest topics.

One of our challenges is to show the narratives and patterns that exist behind misinformation and, with that goal in mind, we coordinated a series of investigations to uncover various actors who spread misinformation. We did it together with allies from our network of Latin American fact checkers: LatamChequea.

We created Factchequeado, a collaborative project between Chequeado and Maldita.es to fight against Spanish-language misinformation that affects Latino communities in the United States. This initiative has more than 30 allied media organizations from 15 states.

This network began in 2014 as a face-to-face meeting in Buenos Aires and currently gathers 38 media organizations from 18 countries. This year we celebrated, in Bogotá, the 4th edition of Latin America’s factcheckers conference, where we shared experiences and tools that will contribute to keep improving the quality of public debate.

We launched the “Latin American network of fact checking trainers", an ambitious regional project for teaching factchecking to journalists and university professors from Argentina, México, Colombia and Peru to act as multipliers.

We organized the 2nd national meeting for the International Media and Information Literacy Week with teachers, directors of educational institutions, researchers, students, journalists, civil society organizations and state agencies with the aim of promoting the strengthening of collaborative networks to promote critical thinking tools in schools.

In the context of the war between Russia and Ukraine, many photos and videos circulated out of context in relation to the conflict. For this reason, in collaboration with +35 organizations of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), we carried out a collaborative database with verifications about the war.

Digital Journalistic Innovation Award 2022. We received a special mention for the work we do to fight misinformation with explainer videos on digital platforms.
'Oscar R. Cardoso' Award for Argentine journalistic work about international relations. Our article "40 years after the Malvinas War: 5 pieces of disinformation that circulated during the war" was chosen as the best informative article about the Malvinas war.

Eikon Awards 2022.In the "Press Relations" category, for the campaign we promoted together with Sanofi to counter misinformation about COVID-19 through workshops for journalists and communicators from all over Latin America.

Diente 2022 Awards, Argentinean Creativity Association.Our institutional campaign Real or Cake, made together with BBDO, was awarded as “Promotions & PR Activations - Public Welfare Campaign”.
