We are Chequeado, a non-governmental, non-profit, non-partisan organisation whose mission is to contribute to improving the quality of public debate to strengthen the democratic system.
We do this through the verification of public discourse, the fight against disinformation, the promotion of access to information and the opening of data in innovative environments to bring evidence to public discussion and encourage critical thinking in society.
Born in October 2010, we are the first organisation of our kind in Latin America and the Southern Hemisphere and one of the top ten fact checkers in the world.
Through our Media, Education, Innovation and Impact and New Initiatives programs, we seek to:
- Improve the quality of public debate.
- Develop antidotes against disinformation.
- Promote access to information and open data.
We are driven to promote citizen participation, so that public debate is based:
- More on data and facts.
- Less on opinions, prejudices and biases.
Also, to defend the right to information and to put reliable data into circulation.
Media
We produce news articles and journalistic content to disseminate verified information. We fact-check public discourse and the circulation of misinformation.
We do this through our website, social media platforms, and a WhatsApp hotline where users can also share content for us to fact-check.
Currently, nearly half of all our fact-checks come from submissions by our community.
Ver másEducation
We carry out educational projects to reduce misinformation and improve public debate. We create innovative content and resources, experiment with various formats, conduct educational research, and provide training at both small and large scales.
We have two main areas of focus based on two key actors: journalists and teenagers. We are particularly interested in Media and Information Literacy. Therefore, we collaborate with key stakeholders, such as high school teachers.

Innovation
We experiment with different formats, designs and tools to receive and disseminate our content and present data, with the aim of engaging the community and activating their participation in public debate.
We also develop new technological tools focused on enabling faster and better fact-checking, such as Chequeabot. We work in collaboration with the Media, Education, Impact and New Initiatives programs, contributing to the visual development of verified information.
Ver másImpact and New Initiatives
We seek to experiment and analyze the impact of Chequeado’s work. To do so, we use both standard metrics and in-depth studies, often in collaboration with academics from various fields.
We also aim to have the best available evidence on how disinformation circulates and functions in order to develop the most effective strategies to counter it. As for new initiatives, we develop specific projects such as LatamChequea, the network of fact-checkers in the region.
